We held our Youth Week Art Exhibition on Gadigal Land to showcase young people’s creativity and celebrate their voices.
Weave’s Youth Week Art Exhibition was an opportunity for 35 local young artists to showcase their talents, many of them exhibiting for the first time, and many of them selling their original work for the first time. The exhibition was held at 107 Projects in Redfern.
"The youth week art exhibition gave me a chance to challenge myself socially and creatively. It was such a fun and rewarding experience."
– Young Women’s Group member
Our Youth Advocates, from Weave’s Young Women’s Group, were instrumental in the planning and development of the event. Weave’s Young Women’s group is for female-identifying young people. 50% of the group are Aboriginal young people and 50% identify as LQBTQI.
The idea for an Art Exhibition came from the Youth Advocates after the overwhelming success of the mini art wall at the 2023 Mad Pride event. After every artist sold their work at Mad Pride, some even commissioned for future pieces by attendees, the group saw that there were further opportunities for community creative expression.
The members of the Young Women’s Group, who planned the event, attended a session on how to curate and design an art exhibition, giving them both creative and event planning skills for future work.
